07/01/08 03:39 PM 'EWS' Fault on R12s by Rick Rice

Decided to ride up to the Chief Joseph Rally and had the pleasure of riding some incredible roads. Highways 395 and 26 in and out of John Day are some of the most scenic. Oregon has some strange ideas of road maintenance. They coat the asphalt road with a layer of loose gravel and leave it. They did this along a 20 mile stretch on Hwy 395. After the rally I rode up to Mount St. Helens. As soon as I checked into a motel (a Sunday) I was biten by the 'EWS' Fault. This is where the ignition aerial won't read your key. A problem on recent R12s. If you are lucky, the problem will be with the key and you can use the spare. Apparently, most faults are with the aerial and there is no bypass. Your stuck. I was stranded for 2 days. On Tuesday the bike got towed to 2 Portland dealers before the parts were available. A new GS was at the dealer with the same problem and the owner was fit to be tied. I took Mt. Shasta home and connected with the 395 in Susanville and rode 400 miles in forest fire smoke.

If you have a recent R12 and have not replaced your ignition aerial, think about it. It seems to be a common problem and the dealer who replaced mine wasn't sure if a recall was in the works.
